Tips & Hints

Distance will play a factor.
The shorter the distance the less it matters.

Ball spin will play a factor.
Backspin will make the ball go higher so the wind will effect it a little more.

Golf Clubs and Golf Balls will play a factor.
       Playing In The Wind

If the wind is directly at you or directly away from you,
add or subtract 1/2 the MPH.

Example
The hole is 165 yards
Head wind of 24 MPH
1/2 of 24 = 12
Add 12 yards to 165 = 177 yards

If the wind is at a 45 deg. angle, add or subtract 25% of MPH.

Example
The hole is 150 yards with a 45 deg. head wind of 12 MPH
25% of 12 = 3
Add 3 yards to 150 = 153

                  Elevation

Every 3 feet elevation equals 1 yard in Distance.

Example
The hole is 150 yards
with a drop in elevation of 30 feet
3 goes into 30 = 10
Subtract 10 from 150 = 140

Example
The hole is 175 yards
with a rise in elevation of 21 feet
3 goes into 21 = 7
Add 7 to 175 =182

                 Putting

Putting is an important part of the game, also one of the hardest to explain.

If you are on the Fringe you can chip, pitch or flop the same as on the fairway.

You can use your wedge on the green if you dont like those long putts - basically you double the distance:

If you have 25 yards to the hole
use your lob wedge
and hit it 50 yards

Note: your club and ball will make a difference as will elevation and green speed.

            Bunker Shots

The value I've settled on for longer (>25yds or so) bunker shots from 30/40 CCC sand. In practice, I add the distance to the cup in yds + elev in ft., then multiply by 1.3. That is with CG wedges and Nike balls, so other equipment may vary.
Example:
25 yd bunker shot to pin elevated 5 ft:
(25 + 5) x 1.3 = 30 x 1.3 = 39 yd.
full backspin
(roughly 70% power, for my 64 deg wedge).

Hitting your shot less than 50% power is the problem. You will see much better results hitting closer to 75-80%. So for the above shot i would suggest using the punch.

I found the flop shot very helpful if there is not a lot of distance of rough between the bunker and the green. If the lie penalty percentage is 30%-40%, or 40%- 50%, then take double the distance.

For example:

I have an 11 yd bunker shot to hit,

I will hit a full backspin 21yd flop shot (which gives a chance to save  par).

But watch out, some of the bunkers in Bethpage Black are only 15%-20%, which you can actually go full distance, such as hitting a 21 yd bunker with a 21yd shot full backspin. Now as Legends sometimes the slope and green can get tricky for tournament, maybe a 1-2 yd off the 2x distance. Golf balls and clubs might react differently but its certainly a method to try out. I've heard a lot of ways to do it by pitching but i personally haven't tried it myself.

Tip To Remember: Hitting your shot less than 50% power is a problem. You will see much better results hitting closer to 75-80%. So if a shot doesn't meet that critera,

I would suggest using the punch, or some other shot more suitable.

I mostly use pitch or punch shots out of sand, although flops do work sometimes - like on Bethpage.  I simply double the extra hit amount for the equivalent rough percent.

For example:

for 30-40 rough, I add 10% extra to the shot but for 30-40 sand, I use 20%.

If I go with full back spin I would add another 5%, so 25% for 30-40 sand.

Then for uphill shots out of sand I add 1 extra yard for each 3' of rise.

Then, if you have enough green in front of you, remember to take off something for the extra roll out you will get out of the sand.

For tourney greens I figure about 2-3 yards of roll out - again if I have enough green in front of the pin.

There are a lot of factors involved - sand percent, shot type used, amount of spin applied, amount of rise from the bunker to the green, green speed, amount of green in front of you and which course you are playing - as the sand performs differently on some courses.

For very difficult sand shots like 40-50 from 6-8' below the green don't be afraid to use a half strength full shot with a wedge if need be.

Try this on green side bunkers. Add your distance, and your elevation, then if 30-40 buried, add 3 and 4. example (30 yards to hole, 5 ft ele, 30-40 buried, 30+5+3+4=42) I would hit it 42 with full backspin. That will give you a good starting point for green side bunkers. Distance from apron to hole, if not much distance, will come into play too, so, may have to hit further than you want to. And if big slope to hole, that will affect this method as well. But, if pin out there away from fringe, pretty flat green, you will be very happy with the results of this method.

If your wedge hits 60 yards max, you wont have much success hitting less than half the distance that club will hit. Meaning, if you add up all you numbers, and come up with 15 or 20, I doubt you will have much success with a shot like that. Would have to hit it a bit further than you want, or try flop or pitch. ( The above advise is for hitting Full )

You can flop out or pitch out on shorter shots. but when flopping, use same formula as above, but must aim left of hole a few feet and ding it. I normally , when using flop shot, try to strike ball at line before the ding, but have found you can flop out of sand and rough, when buried, but must aim left of hole, a few feet, but ding your shot instead of trying to hit at line before ding.Still trying to figure out 15 - 20 buried bunker play, Not 100% formula above works with barely buried green side bunkers.

  • Wind with and against will effect distance - compensate.
  • Ball lands very close to hole & will kick in direction of slope.

A SIDENOTE ABOUT THIS RESOURCES WEBPAGE:
The information in Bunker Shots was compiled over a period of time from different WGT players on the forums.  The authors have not been retained in the notes, so I am unable to give credit to the individuals who wrote them - my apologies for that.  I have denoted that there are different authors by using the red icon next to the block of information (as shown here on the left).

The first 3 segements on this page (Playing In The Wind, Elevation, Putting) came from the original Bushwacker website and can be credited to our very own Ceverett12.
This resources page is a quick and simple resource for now.  It may expand to something more detailed in the future which I would love to do (given the time)... but for now, it is what it is.  If you are interested in contributing to this page and help make our fellow Bushwackers even stronger on the golf course, please use the Contact Us page to share your notes.
